Calculated on 4 November 2026. Newest recorded entry: 2 November 2026.

Discounts by sector and year

Typical discount (median) of offers with an original price, as a percentage of the original price. A value is shown only when the cell rests on at least 30 offers from at least 3 retailers and no retailer dominates, otherwise a dash is shown.

We analyse by the sector of the retailer because it is known for every offer. Product categories exist for only a small part of the offers and are not suitable for a discount statistic.

2026 is the current year, data as of 2 November 2026.

Share of offers with an original price

Share of all recorded offers that show an original price, per year and for all retailers together. It also depends on which retailers were recorded in a year and on whether their source states original prices.

Before 2017 the archive holds no original prices, so no share is shown for those years.

How the figures are made

What the figures are: published offer prices from leaflets and retailer websites, as we recorded them automatically. The discount is the difference between the crossed-out original price and the offer price, as a percentage of the original price.

What they are not: not shelf prices, not prices outside promotions and not a measure of inflation or price rises. We cannot check whether an original price was actually charged before.

We leave out offers with a discount below 1% or above 90%, because such extreme values could distort the result. This affects 618 of 410,420 offers with an original price.

A value is published only when it rests on at least 30 offers from at least 3 retailers (each with at least 5 offers and 2% of the cell) and no retailer accounts for more than 80% of the offers. Individual retailers are never named or compared.

The year is the year in which we recorded an offer. The retailers we record change from year to year, so differences between years do not show how retailer prices developed. Hidden entries and duplicate offers are not counted.

The full description is on the page Methodology.

For context, see the official consumer price index: ONS. We quote no figures from it and do not compare our values with it.
